The steps below should help you in getting started using the resources at CFL.
Creating users
To be able to use the resources, you have to get accounts at SUPR and HPC2N. The former is for applying to and managing compute projects, the second is for gaining access to the compute and storage cluster.
Everyone who is going to use the compute resouce (including the PI) has to have accounts. The PI specifically needs an account on SUPR to apply for the resource, as only PIs should apply for resources. However, if the PI is not using the compute or storage resource an account at HPC2N is not needed.
SUPR
HPC2N provides a detailed guide on how to apply for a SUPR-account, which can be found under the header “SUPR” here.
HPC2N
Similarily, to create an account on HPC2N you can follow the same guide on the page under “HPC2N Account”.
Applying for resources
With logins in place, you can apply for resources at the CFL cluster. Here you have to specify how much resources you need for your project, both computation- and storage-wise.
The same HPC2N page has a project application guide under “Projects” here. However, read the sections below before applying.
Storage
Start by applying for storage. You can start a proposal under Rounds -> Storage Rounds -> Centre Local Storage -> HPC2N Local Storage 20XX on SUPR. Once you have given the proposal a name, you have to fill out some information;
Edit Basic InformationAbstract- A description of the project, or a description of the group and a general description of the projects that you work on.Resource Usage- There are some points here that should be answered regarding usage of the storage. Specify (roughly) how many files will be stored, the total size of those files, what format the files are in (like.las-files), and roughly how many jobs will use the data each month.Abridged Data Management Plan- Try to outline the steps as requested in the form. Contact us if there are any questions.
Edit Classification- Add a classification number appropriate to the research field.
Add Co-Investigator- Here you can add people involved in the project who will use the compute/storage resource. They need to have accounts on SUPR to be added.
Compute
At the moment, there is no specific compute round on SUPR for the CFL cluster. Instead, you have to apply for a compute local round at HPC2N, which will then be manually associated to the CFL cluster. Contact us to get your compute project associated with CFL!
Applying for compute is very similar to storage. Go to Rounds -> Compute Rounds -> Centre Local Compute -> HPC2N Local Compute 20XX and start a proposal. The big difference is
Edit Basic InformationResource Usage- specify if you want to use your own developed software and/or other software.
Resources- From the drop down choose
Kebnekaiseand request capacity. This varies greatly based on need, but around 50-100 x 1000 core-h/month is a good amount. You can contact us directly if you need help determining your resource needs. - Also appy for GPU compute by adding
Kebnekaise GPUto the resource list. 500-1000 GPU-h/month is a good guideline. - For storage choose
No Storage Neededas this is covered by the storage proposal.
